Students from Truro Penwith College construction course visited us again this month, this time from the Level 2 Bricklaying course.
The 22 students and their tutors enjoyed a tour of The Yard led by senior site manager Dan Large and construction manager Justin Rose. They were able to observe first-hand the bricklayers on site constructing the columns on the terraces of the building, including some of the tricky splice work that had to be done to ensure the columns fit the design plans. The students were shown the plans that the tradesmen have to work from and were given a short talk about how they translate to the physical structure that they could see developing. One student was even given the opportunity to put some of his skills to the test by laying a course of bricks himself.
The students were also shown some of the blockwork that is part of the construction of the plant room area at the rear of the building. They asked lots of questions about the techniques they saw being used and how much the materials cost, as well as the all-important rates of pay!
Construction manager Justin Rose said: 'As a former bricklayer it was great to see the next generation coming through and we hope that they make good progress in their studies and we may even see them working on-site in the future.'
The students and tutors all enjoyed their tour and our site managers were helpful as always. We look forward to welcoming the students again as the build progresses.
